چکیده

A 39-year-old man with advanced adultonset Rasmussen’s encephalitis was treated with prednisolone and long-term, high-dose, human intravenous immunoglobulin. A pretreatment, semiquantitative interictal brain perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scan using Tc HMPAO (hexamethylene propylene amine oxime) showed hypoperfusion in the clinically aVected right frontal, parietal and temporal lobes and contralateral perfusion defects. A second scan 8 months later revealed significant improvements (more than two standard deviations) in perfusion of the right frontal and temporal lobes despite serial magnetic resonance imaging evidence of permanent brain damage. This was associated with useful recovery of the patient’s physical and cognitive function. We conclude that serial perfusion brain SPECT scanning is a useful method to demonstrate improvement in patients with Rasmussen’s encephalitis in response to therapy.

HMGB1-TLR Signaling in Rasmussens’ Encephalitis

Rasmussen’s encephalitis is neurological disorder of childhood characterized by uni-hemispheric inflammation, intractable focal epilepsy and progressive cognitive and neurological deficits. Currently, the pathogenesis of Rasmussen’s encephalitis is still enigmatic and hemispherectomy is the only effective method to control the seizures associated with Rasmussen’s encephalitis. Recently data ind...

Adult onset Rasmussen’s encephalitis associated with reflex language induced seizures responsive to Rituximab therapy

Rasmussen’s encephalitis (RE) is a rare, focal and progressive inflammatory disorder of unknown aetiology, resulting in unilateral hemispheric atrophy, contralateral hemiparesis and hemianopia, dysphasia with language-dominant hemispheric involvement and intractable epilepsy. RE is associated with polymorphic seizure types including epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) [1]. Current treatment stra...

Cardiovascular Topics Does dipyridamole-induced ischaemia affect NT-proBNP secretion?

Background: B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and the inactive amino-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) have a prognostic value in heart failure and in myocardial infarction. There has been some evidence that BNP and NT-proBNP can be used in the diagnosis of myocardial ischaemia by improving the sensitivity of exercise-stress testing. Objective: To observe the relationship betwee...

NT-proBNP and the diagnosis of exercise-induced myocardial ischaemia

BACKGROUND Amino terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a sensitive marker of ventricular dysfunction. Exercise causes an increase in the secretion of NTproBNP, and with myocardial ischaemia the increase is more pronounced. This increase has been found to improve the diagnostic sensitivity of the stress ECG in diagnosing myocardial ischaemia in subjects with normal ventricular f...
